Unfortunate circumstances lead to his setting off at a young age, accompanied by Umbo, a friend from home who's in a similar predicament) to find his sister in a far away town.but things are complicated by political intrigue, betrayal, and most of all by the strange gifts that Rigg and Umbo possess.Īnd it is these gifts that introduce timeslippiness into the story (I'm not saying anything else). A boy, Rigg, grows up alone with his father, who educates him with a passionate intensity in all imaginable disciplines. Usually I sum up the plot of the books I review, but to do so in this case is tricky to do without spoilers, so I'll keep it very minimal. And although it's no Ender's Game, it is a very good read. It's a story that combines "magic" with science fiction, and introduces a new Really Smart Boy character placed in an untenable situation. In Pathfinder (2010), Card brings his considerable intelligence to bear on a new world (a colony planet of earth). In Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card placed an incredibly intelligent boy in an almost unbearable science-fiction scenario the brilliantly character-driven action and the meticulously crafted tension of the world-building made this a book to remember.

How do the experts know immediately, and how could the scientists be fooled?Ĭhapters 1 and 2 delve into the mysteries of the human mind’s uncanny ability to almost instantly grasp situations in everyday life. Careful scientific evaluation suggests the kouros might be authentic, but several antiquities experts merely look at the sculpture and declare it fake, which is later revealed to be the truth. The Introduction focuses on the Getty kouros, an ancient Greek statue that, if genuine, would be a highlight of the museum's collection. The book’s six chapters provide examples from many walks of life-art appreciation, couples’ therapy, tennis, politics, marketing, law enforcement, classical music-where rapid judgment can quickly solve problems if used correctly. Blink contains three central ideas: “fast and frugal" thinking is a natural attribute of the human mind and often works better than slow-and-careful reasoning this ability can be distorted or misled and fast cognition can be trained and improved. Most historians interpret the story as a purely literary construction. Though a popular cautionary tale in medieval Europe, there is no other historical evidence for The Treason of the Long Knives. The story is thought to be pseudohistorical as the only surviving records mentioning it are centuries later in the semi-mythological histories of the Historia Brittonum and the Historia Regum Britanniae. The Treason of the Long Knives ( Welsh: Brad y Cyllyll Hirion) is an account of a massacre of British Celtic chieftains by Anglo-Saxon soldiers at a peace conference on Salisbury Plain in the 5th century. *I received a free ARC of Rules of Survival from Entangled Publishing via Netgalley in exchange of an honest review* Shaun and Kayla will need to break all the rules if they hope to get out of this alive. I also love thinking about how to build collaborative systems-what business books would call healthy workflows. I like thinking about how a book might express its idea in every aspect of its physical form. I love looking at Pantone books and headbands and types of foil stamping. I love the paradox of a mandate that focuses on “the utility of frivolity.” I love bookmaking. Our stated mission is to create “Joyful Books for Curious Minds,” which expresses itself as a focus on “skill-building” nonfiction and learning through play. We don’t limit ourselves by age or category. The beauty of Odd Dot is that it’s an in-house creative lab where I get to sit with my team every week and imagine new kinds of projects. But several were quite successful, and that allowed me to become the founding publisher of Odd Dot. A lot of those projects failed if we’re going by sales. Yi Jian Mei (一剪梅) originally means a bough of wintersweet flower, also known as the genus Chimonanthus ,or winter flower, a glorious, fragrant flower native to China. Most of the templates have beautiful names, but they gradually lose their initial meaning and become simply memory aids for a particular form of poetry. The poetic template, one of many, was most popular in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The title of the song is Yi Jian Mei, which used to be simply the name of a poetic template (词牌) that determines the number of lines in a poem, the number of characters in each line and the rhyming scheme, among other things, something like iambic pentameter, the heroic couplet or the format of a sonnet. The song is the theme music for its namesake television drama as well as a defining piece for Yuqing Fei, who retired from his singing career in 2019. Exactly how it made its way to West Texas is a mystery to me, but I am glad. That was one of the most popular songs in my childhood, as well as a karaoke favorite. When driving my son and two of his friends home from a fishing trip, I heard the three teenagers, two of them not Chinese speakers, break out singing " xue hua piao piao, bei feng xiao xiao".
